Robel Mideksa’s Road to Keber-Af: The Young Voice Reviving Ethiopia’s Sonic Memory

By Addis Insight December 1, 2025

Robel Mideksa didn’t stumble into music — he grew up inside it. Long before his name started circulating in Ethiopia’s rising-star circles, he was the kid in the Lutheran Mission Primary School choir whose voice stopped adults in their tracks. One of them was Mr. Bizuayehu, a veteran teacher known for spotting talent early and pushing kids toward their destiny. For Robel, that moment was the spark. The gateway. The first door opened.

From there, he chased music with the kind of hunger only childhood prodigies seem to possess. He trained at artistic centers across Addis — including Ababa Tesfaye’s famed Father’s House — sharpening a voice that was beginning to find its color, its power, its purpose.

But Robel didn’t plan to do it alone. With a tight-knit group of friends, he formed Zinar Zema, an all-male vocal band with harmonies sweet enough to cut through the noise of the city. Their breakout tracks, “Yene Set” and “Tewbeshal,” turned the group into a fast-rising act. Within months, they were landing nominations at the Leza Awards and Addis Music Awards, and gracing stages across the country with the confidence of artists built for longevity.

Robel’s voice soon found a new home in Ethiopia’s film soundtracks, adding emotional weight to scenes and stories. His work with the beloved vocalist Zebiba Girma on “Temeles” — the soundtrack to Wedefit — made him one of those voices audiences recognized before they even checked the credits.

Still, he kept searching for a sound truly his own.

Performing cover sets in Addis hotels, Robel crossed paths with Ermias Fekadu, a guitarist and composer with an ear for detail and a taste for reinvention. The chemistry was instant. Ermias heard something in Robel — a voice built for storytelling, a tone that could carry history without sounding dated. Together, they began sketching out a sonic world neither had heard before.

Their early singles, “Knef Knef” and “Hiwot Alen,” were the first hints of what was coming. New rhythms. New colors. A vocal style that felt both ancestral and futuristic. The audience got it immediately — and wanted more.

Now, the “more” is finally here.

A Nostalgic Rebirth: The Album Keber-Af

Robel and Ermias are stepping into the spotlight with Keber-Af, a 12-track debut album that isn’t just a project — it’s a mission. A love letter to Ethiopia’s past. A reminder of the beauty buried beneath the noise of the present.

The message is simple, almost prayer-like:

“Let us return with love to the peaceful Ethiopia of the past.”

Musically, Keber-Af fuses modern arrangements with ancient Ethiopian cultural textures. It’s contemporary, but haunted — in the best way — by the sounds that shaped Ethiopia’s musical identity. Veteran musicians lend their fingerprints across the album, giving it the richness of something crafted slowly, intentionally.
